Leveled UP! MCO Week a major success

Date August 7, 2008

The UP Mass Communicators Organization, in cooperation with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Dunkin Donuts and ToniCare Bottling Corporation, recently concluded MCO Week, which celebrated the organization’s 15th anniversary on July 21-25.

True to its molding, challenging and outshining catchphrase and the “UP MCO Academy” theme, MCO Week proved to be a smashing success with different activities lined up for the occasion.

UP MCO Academy starts its schoolyear
The celebration officially kicked off with the annual Grand Pakain and the launch of UP MCO’s exhibit at the CMC Skywalk on July 22.

The exhibit displayed the organization’s history and anniversary activities. It also flaunted some of UP MCO’s prominent alumni and past chairpersons. TV productions created by MCOers were also shown during the launch.

CMC students, employees, and faculty members alike lined up for a taste of the Grand Pakain’s scrumptious lunch served by the By George! Cuisine.

Outshining and outreaching, the UP MCO way
As a way of MCOers to give back, the celebration included the annual outreach program dubbed “Outshine, Outreach” which held on July 21 in cooperation with the Handmaids of the Divine Heart at Don Antonio Heights, QC.

MCOers themselves served a hearty meal to children from poor families and prepared games and story-telling sessions to complete a fun-filled day.

MBO mobilizes and moves Kalai dormers
With its stance to promote mass media education among its fellow students, UP MCO held this year’s first MCO Box Office (MBO) at the Kalayaan Residence Hall, last July 23.

Featured in this year’s MBO are the film theses “Big Bro” by MCOer Victor Villanueva and James de la Vega, “Katha” by MCOer Erika Fukushima and Patricia Serrano, and “Laman-Loob” starring MCOer Jerick Parrone; the MTVs “Para Sa Akin” by Ynna Yalong, “Panalangin” by Eleazar del Rosario, “Shakespeare in Love” by Alexandra Lipio, and “Afraid for Love to Fade” by Rawnna Crisostomo; and the TV pilot episode “Bitin” directed by Christer Salire.

MBO showcases films, MTVs and TV episodes featuring MCOers as directors, producers, talents, writers or part of the production crew.

With the theme “MO^Bilize: Let MCO Box Office Move You,” this year’s MBO not only electrified the night on the diverse academic and social culture in the university through the student productions.

Major Issue right on “target”
Highlighting the MCO Week is this semester’s Major Issue titled “Crossfire: Targeting the Issues in Conflict Reporting” held on July 25 at the CMC Auditorium.

Major Issue is a symposium held every semester which tackles current and relevant issues in the media.

Keynote guests of the Major Issue are freelance journalist Arlyn Dela Cruz and GMA 7 reporter Joseph Morong, while Prof. Ma. Cristina Rara of the Department of Journalism served as the reactor of the two speakers.

The symposium, which was presented together with the UP Department of Journalism, was attended by mass communication students from UP, St. Paul University of Quezon City and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
